T-shirt Design Brief

At top the following: "Black: (noun) Descendant of an American slave." The image: A black man wearing only tattered pants with rope belt. Thin but muscular. Carrying a hoe over his shoulder. A look of dignity in his eyes. At bottom: "ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVED"

The slaves are to be recognized as strong people who survived under the most challenging conditions. A stupid slave was a dead slave, and a weak slave was a dead slave.

The artist should understand the strength it took to believe that a better day was coming and to keep that optimism while under the most severe, institutionalized oppression. The drawing should reflect that understanding. This is not a joke. It is not satire. The person seeing this should give pause to recognize and reflect on the truth that only the strong survived the crucible of slavery.
