Icon Design Brief
HI-TEC is an international footwear brand that requires broad set of unique icons to represent a mixture of technologies (like "Dri-Tec") and special features of their shoes (like "Stretch Fit"). This Open Brief project involves designing the first three (3) icons that willform part of a broader set of thirty-two (32) icons. The three icons required in response to this brief are: XcM, Stretch Fit, and Winter Traction. Please see the attached brief for more information ...
Phase 2
The next phase, should HI-TEC choose to continue with the project, isto design a further 29 icons for approximately £1000. Designers whose work is selected in Phase 1 may be used exclusively for Phase 2 of the project or HI-TEC may run further open brief(s) to get the next 29 designs.
Who is the client?
HI-TEC are an international footwear brand operating in over 100 countries worldwide. Core markets include Outdoor walking, running, trail, sandals, winter and approach shoes. Golf, squash, badminton, running and general sports shoes. Please see the attached brief formore information ...
The 3 icons required:
1. XcM (Technology icon)
Description: logo to communicate a ‘seamless construction’. Traditional shoe uppers involve several pieces of material joined together bystitched thread which also helps to provide structure and strength to the upper. XcM is a different technique which removes the need for stitching through the use of TPU welding. The accompanying text needs to use XcM, but you may add to this if it is succint and improves what is communicated. For example, you may use "XCM Strength"
2. Stretch Fit (Feature icon)
Currently used on sandals but with applicability on other footwear stretch fit technology does what it says. The materials in the shoe coupled with its design ensure that the shoe fits closely around thefoot. The elastic properties of the materials themselves hold the shoe comfortably in place.
3. Winter traction (Feature icon)
Product with good grip in wintery/icy conditions.
Feature vs Technology Icons
Feature icons:
- Will be used: ON WEB CATALOGUE &,,,, PRINT ETC. NOT ON PRODUCT
- Should come in two versions: 1) text and icon version and 2) an icon only version
Technology icons:
- Will be used: ON PRODUCT ALONGSIDE PRINTED CATALOGUE/WEB USE ETC.
- Should come in one version: 1) text and icon version
Updates
Re XcM and its benefit - Comfort is a big issue
here. Any seams in shoes are potential touch/irritation points to the
foot and removing this ensures the shoes will be more comfortable. That
said you are exactly right in that the seams in conventionally made
shoes add structure and strength – hence the use of the thermo welding
to achieve this – however in terms of priority I would have to say
comfort is the priority.

Requirements
Must have
- Key must have requirements:
- All three icons
- Consistency of style across the icon set
- For the technology icon (XcM): A text+icon version
- For the feature icons (Stretch fit and Winter Traction): An icon only version and text+icon version
Nice to have
- The text (in the text+icon versions) to be to the right of the icon
- A clear monotone or grey-scale color scheme, A certain consistency between icons is necessary so that it is clear that these work are all part of the same system
- The feature icons differentiated from the technology icons somehow
Should not have
- Complete or parts of stock icons or vectors purchased or downloaded
- Complex color schemes, gradients that will not work on product or that will detract from the sense of a clear set of logos
