Logo Design Brief

Hi designers,

I've taken a 'more info is better' approach to describing the brief. Please read through this in full before you start work. Of course, if there are any questions or clarifications needed, please get in touch right away.

One Point IQ is a boutique business consulting and technology business. We are starting a new, focused practice that will specialise in the much talked about areas of ‘big data’ and ‘analytics’.

Our hybrid of business competencies and deep technology competencies allow us to truly approach the (big and small) data space from the business value perspective, not purely from a technical solution perspective.

One Point IQ is effectively a ‘spin off’ from an existing technology architecture consulting company called One Point Consulting Ltd (http://www.onepointltd.com). The ‘IQ’ part signifies the new company’s focus on data / insights / intelligence.

We have four ‘service lines’:

1. Business consulting: High end (premium) consulting services usually aimed at senior executives who are looking to get value from their organisation’s data (and / or relevant data available from outside their company.)

2. Technology research & delivery: We might have a unit called ‘One Point IQ Labs’ as our experimental R&D function and ‘One Point IQ Delivery’ as the unit that delivers technical projects that we have sold to our clients – for example: data architecture, technical design, software development, technology implementation. These two units would typically carry out proof-of-concepts through to full blown technical project implementations.

3. Training: We might call this service line ‘One Point IQ Academy’, where our experts train other companies on the use of analytics / big data / cloud and other technologies.

4. Products & services: This service line focuses on developing revenue streams that are not project based. For example, we may develop our own apps, technologies, hosted (cloud) services based on work we’ve done in the other services lines. Some of these products or services could have free / ‘freemium’ models to create a community, enhance our ‘eminence’ and an ‘ecosystem’ around One Point IQ.

Although based in the UK, we will have operations in other parts of the world, including India. Our clients come from all over, but mostly Europe at the moment.

Our target audience separates broadly into two categories:

1. Mature organisations - Big organisations (enterprises, government departments) and smaller companies (small to medium size businesses); and
2. Entrepreneurs and start-ups.

Our ‘end’ buyers are typically senior executives in their organisations, from founders to CEOs, CTOs, COOs and so on.

The truly ‘desperate problem’ we solve for our ‘mature organisation’ buyer is to:
• Demystify and remove the confusion around the field of Big (and small) Data; and
• Figure out real value of their data through practical, small steps without overwhelming them with technical answers.

The truly ‘desperate problem’ we solve for our entrepreneur and startup buyers is to:
• Help them with innovating new business models, products and services related to (big and small) data through our technical competencies and business consulting competencies.

Our competitors are large and small consultancies, systems integrators and technology suppliers. These include the likes of Accenture, Capgemini, Deloitte, IBM and numerous smaller firms.
A search on Google for “Big Data consulting” will give you plenty of hits as a starting point.

As you will see on its website, One Point Consulting Ltd uses the ‘pointing hands’ symbol in its identity. We are happy for elements of it to be incorporated somehow into the One Point IQ logo. However, using this ‘legacy’ symbol is not a requirement. (In other words, you do not have to be constrained by it.)

Currently there are spaces between ‘One’, ‘Point’ and ‘IQ’. We are happy with ‘OnePoint IQ’ and ‘Onepoint IQ’ if either of these work well in your identity system design. We do not like the fully connected variations like ‘OnePointIQ’ or ‘onepointIQ’ or ‘onepointiq’. We do not use the number ‘1’ in any variation. We do not shorten the name to OPI or any other combination. (‘1.IQ’ may have possibilities, but we don’t want to prejudge anything.)

The logo will be the starting element of a cohesive design for our identity system that we want professionally designed. So, we are looking for designers to keep this bigger picture in mind and partner with us on creating something really outstanding.

Thanks and enjoy.

Updates

Hello designers,

Thank you for your submissions so far. There are some interesting ideas.

We don't feel yet that we have an 'arresting', heart-stopping design that conveys what we are about. Many designs submitted so far use colour well, but don't represent us or our field (data, technology, insights, business value, innovation) well enough.

So, please keep your creative juices flowing.

We have uploaded a 2nd attachment, which is an event guide from a Big Data conference. You will see logos of various companies playing in our field in the brochure (from last year).

We will be launching our logo and brand at this conference this year, so your logo design has to stand out. Again, we don't feel most of our designs so far would make us stand out from the crowd  and ideally draw people in. So, we look forward to more refinements and new submissions.

Thanks again.

Requirements
Must have
  • Our logo must have an easily recognizable symbol. We would like to use this symbol on its own (e.g. the Nike swoosh or Apple’s omnipresent symbol) or together with the company wordmark.

The typeface used for the logo must covey a modern but timeless feel. This means that we do not want our identity to be ‘cool now’ but go out of fashion quickly (e.g. reflections.) Just to give you an idea, we have started to use Noticia Text (http://goo.gl/b5c1Q) on our temporary identity material so far. We like this typeface because it looks modern, elegant and not common (e.g. it is not shipped with Windows, iOS, Android). We are open to your design recommendations (in other words, there is not a requirement to use this typeface.)

People who come across our identity (website, collateral, etc.) should instantly form an opinion of expertise, excellence and vibrancy (excitement).

We want a fresh, confident and trustworthy brand that stands out from the Big Data crowd (see http://goo.gl/yDGWL, http://goo.gl/kKwMz, http://goo.gl/ku85T).

The brand needs to appeal to the ‘boring’ large organisations as well as the agile, exciting smaller companies and startups.
Nice to have
  • We like the idea of a 3-dimensional logo. This could allow the complexities of big data to be represented better than a 2-D logo. See attachment for some designs we like.

Even if multiple colours are used, we want to make sure that the logo can be reproduced in a single colour, such as black, and still be recognisable (e.g. on a press advert or fax letter).

Although a dark background is not out, for web layout purposes and print we need the logo / identity to look good on a white or very light grey background.
