Graphic Design Brief

Need: To design a logo that shouts both 'Hawaii' and 'Duck (Koloa)'! This would be used on T-shirts (the primary need), stickers, and magnets.

Background: I work for the State of Hawaii in trying to protect and promote the Hawaiian duck - aka the KOLOA MAOLI (meaning native duck in Hawaiian). The biggest problem is people's ignorance of its existence. Its best selling point is the fact that it is endemic to Hawaii (i.e. found nowhere else on earth), so to promote its Hawaiian roots is essential. Therefore, designs that can capture Hawaii are what I'm looking for. Hawaiian designs can be bold and colorful, and Hawaiian tattoos are popular.

I have attached some photos and design ideas that you are free to use or ignore, altough the image of a duck must play some role in the design otherwise people will have no idea what a Koloa is. Please visit http://dlnr.hawaii.gov/wildlife/koloa/
for more info on the duck if you need it.

One more thing; the green wing flash (or speculum) are unique to the Koloa. The mallard has a blue to purple speculum. This is just one unique feature of the Koloa which could be used in the design. The feathers are also uniquely patterned but this is maybe something only a biologist might get!
