Logo Design Brief

We need an application logo and three icons designed for a Microsoft Word 2010 add-in used in Royal Navy warships to record important events and thereby produce a diary (ship's log).

We need:

An application logo. This should use only Royal Navy colours (see brand guidelines) and be reminiscent of/inspired by a diary or formal written record, diary or 'ship's log'. This art will only be used as a graphic (not as an icon) and should therefore be large and high-resolution (1024x1024). The logo should evoke a modern, clean design - no quills and parchment! Stylising the Royal Navy logo is to be avoided.

Each of the following three icons should share a consistent style. Please try to only use colours from the branding guide. We want a modern, clean, simple and flat design - no historical allusions please. These icons will be used on a Microsoft ribbon control. Format is PNG. Required sizes are 16x16, 20x20, 24x24, 32x32, 40x40, 48x48, 64x64.

An icon for a 'Comment' function. A 'comment' is the transcribed speech of a naval officer (say, the captain). A speech bubble would do but we are open to alternative suggestions.

An icon representing daytime. A simple, clean sun for example.

An icon representing nighttime. A simple, clean moon and/or stars for example.

A large freelance job will follow this contest for the design of the remainder of the application's many icons. We are therefore looking to establish a productive working relationship with a designer that we can keep coming back to for bespoke icon and graphic designs as the application evolves.

• Perhaps typescript on a page with waves as a watermark. Any ships should have a gun on the front to make them obviously a warship.
