Icon Design Brief

We need an application icon for an app for the Mac that lets users process batches of images. All kinds of image operations – such as resizing, rotating, coloring the background, adding a shadow, rounding corners, adding a border, adding an overlay, etc – can be combined in 'workflows'. Workflows can be saved to disk and be shared with others.

The icon should look beautiful and professional on Mac OS. Ideally, but not necessarily, it should convey the meaning of what the app does.

The icon should conform to Apple's icon design guidelines for Mac OS X. If you're not yet familiar with designing icons for Mac OS, reading this is highly recommended: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/userexperience/conceptual/applehiguidelines/IconsImages/IconsImages.html

We have added an Illustrator file to show you what we've come up with so far, but please do not take this too seriously! It may help spark some inspiration, but we hope that designs that take a completely different approach work better. We've also added a (partial) screenshot of the app.

Please check out the section with Comments and Questions (/ Designer discussion) as well!

Target Market(s)

The target audience of the app consists of designers, software developers, people that work with digital photos, etc. The app is supposed to be easy enough to be used by almost anyone, but we expect that most interest will come from professionals users.

Requirements
Must have
  • The icon should be appropriate for Mac OS X and look good on it. What this means is very well described here: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/userexperience/conceptual/applehiguidelines/IconsImages/IconsImages.html
Nice to have
  • So far we've come across different ideas that we think might work:
    1. A semi-realistically looking icon consisting of two or more images and two tools, such as a pencil and scissors, a saw and a screwdriver, a drawer and a… Or maybe even three tools, if that doesn't look too messy.
    2. An abstract icon that uses the shape that's also used for the step icons in the screenshot (left-side). Maybe multiple of these shapes could be combined into a nice overall shape.
    3. A semi-realistically looking icon consisting of a robot that manipulates images.
    4. A semi-realistically looking icon consisting of some documents on top of a work bench.
Should not have
  • An iOS-like design; a mix of different styles (such a realistic parts and abstract parts); similar to many other icons.
