Illustration Design Brief

I need an illustration of a group of several average people in a roller coaster car experiencing terror. These folks have already experienced terror on the part of the coaster in the background and are now climbing a very steep and tall hill.

The purpose of this graphic is to illustrate customers and their experiences of the costs of natural gas over the past couple of years. The price of natural gas is highly volatile and during times of high demand such as very cold winters, etc. the price of natural gas skyrockets. This graphic should help illustrate that concept.

The illustration you produce, if selected, will be used in a newspaper ad. Therefor, the typical limitations of newspaper reproduction should be considered in the development of this graphic. For example, extremely fine details will not be fully reproduced in a newspaper ad. Also, while I’d like a graphic that is colorful and dramatic, the priority is for the illustration to look good in a black and white format.

The people in the illustration need to represent typical Americans. Perhaps one is a nurse or a school teacher or a construction worker or a pilot or a police officer or a fire fighter. Perhaps someone is old and maybe there’s a kid in a car. Anything that helps illustrate diversity and average working class folks would be helpful.

I imagine these coaster riders being very fatigued and tired from being beaten repeatedly by the fluctuations of natural gas prices. This is not a coaster they can get off of anytime they want. If they want natural gas, they must ride the coaster. Now, at the point of your illustration, the coaster riders are climbing an extremely steep and tall part of the coaster. The viewer of the illustration does not see or have any indication that the coaster will turn back down at all. For all the viewer knows the climb will continue well into the future.

I further imagine that the style this illustration might take is a look similar to a newspaper political cartoon or a cartoon or one of those drawings you might get on vacation where the head is significantly larger than the body. I imagine the viewers position is higher than the cart that is working it’s way very fast up the track. I also see lots of ups and downs in the track behind the cart showing that the cart riders have traveled over a very turbulent ride prior to the point they are at today. To the extent that the actual volatility might be illustrated, I’ve attached a chart (from several perspectives) showing the volatility over the past four years.

While I have provided some significant and very specific guidance for the kinds of ideas that might be viable, I am very open to you showing your own creative direction in this project so long as you can help illustrate the kinds of things I’ve mentioned above such as volatility, terror, fear, the price is climbing and the rider has no idea when it will fall again, etc.

When finished, a typical viewer might feel sympathy for the coaster riders and anger toward the coaster company. The coaster riders are clearly on this ride “together” and they can do nothing about it. Use of sarcasm and humor might also work to help illustrate the unfortunate situation that these riders find themselves in. The typical view of this illustration will be an average American. You are drawing something to connect to the typical person.

The final deliverable can potentially be any one of the following: vector art in an illustrator format, a photoshop file, high quality jpg file. If there are other types of files you’d prefer to work in, let me know and I’ll see if any other exceptions can be made. The final file quality should be sufficient to reproduce as a full-page newspaper ad.

I’ve attached some other illustrations to help spur your creative thoughts. However, these are not really what I am looking for but they do have some concepts that I like. I've been unable to find exactly what I need.
