T-shirt Design Brief

Project Brief: Vista Lakes Elementary Chess Club T-Shirt Design

I'm looking for a creative and kid-friendly t-shirt design for our Vista Lakes Elementary Chess Club, which includes students ages 7 to 11. The shirt will be royal blue, and the design should be colorful, playful, and school-spirited—while keeping printing costs in mind.

🎨 Design Concept:
A chess board as the central visual

Chess pieces reimagined as animated children—each piece represented by a fun, expressive kid character:
♟️ Chess Piece Character Traits (Kid-Style)
Pawn – The Determined Dreamer Small but mighty, always ready to move forward and prove they belong at the top.

Rook – The Loyal Protector Solid and dependable, this kid is the team’s sturdy sidekick—always watching the corners and keeping things in line.

Knight – The Spirited Adventurer Zips in with zigzags and surprises! A creative thinker who loves solving problems in unexpected ways.

Bishop – The Thoughtful Strategist Quietly clever, always seeing the big picture and finding diagonal solutions others miss.

Queen – The Bold Leader Fearless, fast, and full of flair—this kid can do it all and isn’t afraid to take charge.

King – The Calm Captain Wise and steady, this All Star keeps cool under pressure and knows how to rally the team.

Text placement:

Top: "Vista Lakes Elementary Chess Club"

Bottom: "All Stars"

đź’ˇ Style Notes:
The design should be vibrant and engaging while at the same time, kid friendly.

Please prioritize bold, high-contrast colors that pop against royal blue such as Sunshine Yellow, Tangerine Orange, and Lime Green (it doesn't have to be these colors but colors that pop and draw the eyes to the design).

Requirements
Must have
  • Royal Blue Shirt Base All design elements must complement and pop against this background. Central Chessboard Visual Serves as the anchor of the design—playful, bold, and easy to recognize. Kid-Character Chess Pieces Each piece reimagined as a fun, expressive child with distinct personality traits: Confident Rook Thoughtful Bishop Bold Queen Spirited Knight Determined Pawn Calm King Top Text: “Vista Lakes Elementary Chess Club” Clear school branding for pride and visibility. Bottom Text: “All Stars” Reinforces school spirit and club identity. Bold, High-Contrast Accent Colors Must work well with royal blue and minimize ink layers. Kid-Friendly Style Whimsical, animated, and age-appropriate for students ages 7–11. Print-Efficient Design Avoid gradients, excessive layering, or overly complex color blends to keep production affordable.
Nice to have
  • Mini Motifs or Icons Around the Board Stars, lightning bolts, speech bubbles, or playful pawns scattered around the chessboard to add movement and visual interest. Subtle School Mascot or Logo Integration A small All Star or Vista Lakes emblem tucked into the corner or on a piece’s shirt—adds school pride without clutter. Hidden Message or Easter Egg A tiny “VLE” tucked into the board or a piece’s outfit—fun for kids to find and feel part of an inside joke. Optional Sleeve or Back Print A quote like “Think. Move. Win.” or “Every Piece Counts” could go on the back or sleeve if budget allows. Character Names or Nicknames Give each chess kid a name like “Riley the Rook” or “Benny the Bishop”—great for club storytelling or future merch.
Should not have
  • Overly Complex Artwork Avoid intricate shading, gradients, or tiny details that won’t translate well on fabric or may increase printing costs. Dark, Low-Contrast Colors Colors like navy, maroon, or deep purple may blend into the royal blue shirt and lose visibility. Aggressive or Intimidating Imagery Since the audience is ages 7–11, steer clear of intense expressions, battle themes, or overly serious chess motifs. Excessive Text Keep wording minimal and impactful—too much text can clutter the design and reduce readability. Generic Clipart or Stock Icons These can feel impersonal and miss the playful, school-spirited vibe you’re aiming for. Complicated Fonts Avoid script or overly stylized fonts that are hard for kids to read or don’t match the animated theme. Distracting Background Elements Busy patterns or unnecessary borders can pull focus from the central chessboard and characters. Inconsistent Style Across Pieces All character pieces should feel like part of the same world—same illustration style, energy, and tone.
