Logo Design Brief

I intend to create "The Thomas Academy" and need a logo. The Thomas Academy will publish a series of short lectures, both written and in video format, on topics such as the stock market, macro-economics, crowd psychology, and management.
I am thinking of something like a stylized water course in black, reminding of "Black River", combined with the title.
The logo should inspire trust, confidence and authority, suitable for a teaching/learning environment and/or for a financial services business. A heraldic shield with wavy black water might be an inspiration, though by no means a given.
