Print Design Brief
We may hire the winning designer to continue freelance work later as we move forward (only focusing on Save the Dates now, invitations don't get mailed until early August).
Note we do not need full invitation design. Just the illustration / design elements that we will be using.
We are designing our own invitations, save the dates, website, etc. for our wedding and can handle the layouts, font selection, and so forth. However, we would like design assistance with the icons / logos and additional design elements that require creative skills we don't have - mainly illustration / drawing. Then we'll take the winning package elements and incorporate into the work we're doing.
Black and white only.
The "save the date" PDF file attached is a first cut / draft idea for a save the date. The wedding date is Oct 13 2012.
The key to this is getting the look / feel / spirit right that reflects our overall personalities, design direction of the wedding overall.
We expect this would be hand drawing / illustration but we want some design to have the look and feel of a wood carving relief print. Also maybe like Davinci's notebook style (see helicopter file and "icon direction" files).
We'll provide lots of directional samples / examples.
***We're seeking something a middle ground between Hatch show print (Nashville music poster company style), the hand drawing style from Leonardo Davini's notebooks, and wood carving / relief printing for all the elements.***
Directional / creative input:
See starred comment above. Rustic chic or country chic (although this is more mountain than country) are the terms often used. Searching these terms with "wedding" in google and pintrest and the like will bring you much assistance.
Casual, fun, playful, charming, elegant (not fancy), refined (not stuffy), relaxed, casual (not frumpy), mountain, outdoors, classy, paying attention to the details, the little things, family, friends, home, community, love.
Needs a professional / refined feel even though it's casual / rustic.

- Mono-color (assuming black and white).
Professional / refined feel even though casual / rustic.
The deliverables are, in order of importance towards winning:
4-6 icons / logos / images:
In order of priority and importance:
A) two interlinked rings (wedding bands). With "hbc3" on one and "kmf" on the other or potentially incorporating "hbc3 + kmf" as a whole together if it works (these are our initials....all lower case is intentional, we are open to creative ideas).
B) an illustration / graphic of what I'll refer to as a floating chinese candle lantern. These are light paper / tissue lanterns that hold a candle that float up into the air and eventually land safely and biodegrade. We will be using dozens of these as our "send off" closure of the night and would love an icon of one of these..... people may not know what it is until they see the real thing. We'll share examples / photos and you can search based on this description.
C) We would love a wood carve looking version of the "save the date" black block with white lettering that is on the attached PDF.
D) we would like an "at symbol".... the @ in a wood carving / relief print / stamp style look.
Nice to have
- Update 5/3 on font / style that I sent to one designer:
For the @, Save the Date, and rings / initials, I did a lot of searching to give a better idea of if this can be done with fonts / effects rather than by hand. This is what I found and gives more direction on what I mean:

Note I mean for the font look / style: NOT for the piece of wood or coloring effects. This is a little bit too rough / straight angle only. Imagine a middle round between this and some of the fonts in the links I'm sharing now.

This is not as close to what I want but still directionally closer than what you have

Original post:
In continuation of the icons in "must have" above:
E) we are open to additional graphics / drawings / icons but would suggest 1 or 2 at most in addition to A thru D above. Again, these are not required for winning and we do not expect them at this cost. Focus on A, B, and the border elements mentioned first, but we wanted to share. This could be things such as: mason jars, illustration / tasteful caricatures (although not circus / tourist style) of the two of us; our cat; Atlanta GA symbols (where we are from) such as the skyline or the word "Atlanta" in a fitting style; a heart, etc.
If desired to add:
supporting design elements such as borders/frames, highlight accent graphics/drawings, custom symbols to use (more below), and so forth (valued but not required to win)
Supporting design elements such as borders/frames, highlight accent graphics/drawings, custom symbols to use (more below), and so forth (valued but not required to win):
-could be branches, twigs, vintage border elements, or more. We want them to be: simple, elegant, rustic, country, refined. We know these can be conflicting directions in some ways. Could also include a less simple branch that we use as a side element / on back of envelope, etc that is more like a full limb with a few branches, etc but that ties with the entire package design.
- will provide samples / direction
Should not have
Western / cowboy elements. No wagon wheels or log-fonts. Likely no cowboy boots unless done in a very tasteful way that feel more country/mountain than western (better just to avoid)
Although it may be elegant, simple, refined in ways, we would not want it to be conservative, stuffy, overly upscale, or fancy. We will be avoiding many of the traditional signs of "the best" weddings. No tuxedos, likely no full suits in the audience. We want it to be amazing and refined yet relaxed, homey, and down to earth.
