A number of nice designs have come in. And I want to thank everyone for the efforts they've put into this project. Based on the designs I've seen, I'd like to make a few comments that might help everyone to be more successful with this project.
1. THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DESIGNS SO FAR PLACE THE MARTINI GLASS AT OR NEAR THE TOP OF THE DESIGN, WITH THE TEXT BELOW OR AROUND IT. Designs that have the text covering the martini glass seem muddled and are not visually as nice.
2. THE BEST DESIGNS SO FAR ARE VERY SIMPLE. I actually added to the brief that it would be nice if the final design could easily be modified to be made into a neon sign. The best designs so far all have this quality. The brief says this design is in red and black on a white background, but the best designs so far are simple enough to work in just one color as well.
3. THE BEST DESIGNS SO FAR HAVE A CUSTOMIZED FEELING IN THE CURSIVE LETTERING. I don't think you will succeed in this project by just using a simple cursive font with no modifications. But these modifications will be subtle, with no huge fancy flourishes to maintain the fundamental simplicity of a 1940's design feeling. Remember that in the 1940's all cursive work was done by hand, as there were no cursive "fonts" at that time, and designers took pride in the subtle quality of their cursive design work.
THANK YOU AGAIN EVERYONE!
TWO MORE OBSERVATIONS:
4. THE BEST SUBMISSIONS ARE KEEPING THE WORDS "FANCY GLASS" TOGETHER AND TREATING "THE" AND "TAVERN" DIFFERENTLY. Typically, the best submissions write "Fancy Glass" in cursive lettering and use a simpler printed font for "THE" and "TAVERN".
5. A LOT OF SUBMISSIONS, EVEN THE BEST ONES, ARE FAILING TO APPRECIATE THE NUANCES OF 1940's TEXT, AND ARE GETTING THIS WRONG. Please pay special attention to the photo of the American store front I've provided. On the window, you'll see a great example of cursive text of this period. On the neon sign above, you'll see a great example of simple sans-seriph text from this period. It is not Helvetica, it is a little bolder and more horizontally expanded. I am making allowances for this as I look at these designs, as text styles can alway be modified a bit, and I don't want to eliminate a great design because the font was a little off, but I would be happy to see people paying more attention to this.
I'm getting a lot of submissions that have an inappropriate cursive font. So I uploaded an image of the logo of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This handwritten style is very typical of the 1930's and 1940's. It's "fatter" than the cursive styles we use today.

Hi Project owner,
Vintage style drawings and logos are one of my specialties here in Designcrowd.
I've worked on a great design, however the project was closed before I could submit it.
could you reopen the project so I can submit my design?
Thanks!
Hi De, I'm sorry but I am well on my way to working through changes with the project winner. I have two more design jobs coming up, and if you want to send me your design, you can consider it an audition for a future invitation, and of course, if I love it want to use it more than the design I'm currently refining with the contest winner, I'll open up a job here and pay you for it. You can send it to William at snakeweed followed by com.
