Book Cover Design Brief
I need a book cover for my young adult thriller, 'Finding Hannah.' I will use this image primarily for e-publishing on e-readers, and hopefully someday on a hardcover. It is very important that the image can be easily recognizable when it is in thumbnail view, just as one would see it while shopping online. It is also important that the image be viewable on a black and white e-reader, so contrasting light and dark images are a plus.
Requirements (taken from Amazon Kindle):
- Image dimensions of at least 500 by 800 pixels.
- A maximum of 2000 pixels on the longest side is preferred
- Ideal height/width ratio of 1.6
Here is a 'flap cover' summary of the book:
Fifteen year old Dylan Beachley is so happy the last day of school is finally over, until his older sister Hannah is taken from their rural New Hampshire home while he is asleep. Weeks of searching the surrounding woods turn up no clues, but Dylan refuses to stop looking when the official search is called off. He meets Molly, a tenacious fifteen year old who just moved to the area with her drug using mother. Dylan and Molly bond as they continue searching for Hannah. Dylan must deal with his furious parents, the elements, and Molly’s abusive home life while stopping at nothing to find Hannah and the man who took her.
I’ve come up with three cover ideas, but feel free to surprise me as I’m open to other ideas besides what is listed below. These ideas are listed in no particular order.
Cover Idea # 1.
Show Hannah being taken, at night, by a man into the woods down the Appalachian Trail. The man would have the gun in one hand and be holding Hannah’s arm with the other. The moon is out and sky is clear. Description of the man: Caucasian, in his late 30s, 6 feet tall, broad shoulders and light blond hair, wearing jeans and a dark hooded sweatshirt and was armed with a handgun. Description of Hannah: Caucasian 15 year old female, long black hair, roughly 5 feet 6 inches tall, skinny/athletic (she's an avid swimmer), wearing bright yellow T-shirt and gray sweatpants. I’d prefer the two be walking away from the viewer, but would be open to the reverse as well. If possible, please incorporate an Appalachian Trail marker. (See attached sketch titled Cover idea 1.jpeg and see example attached image - Appalachian Trail Marker.jpeg)
Cover Idea # 2.
In daytime, show a tree that has had a ‘Missing’ poster stapled to it. The missing poster would have a smiling picture of Hannah Beachley with a description below the picture: Caucasian 15 year old female, long black hair, roughly 5 feet 6 inches tall, last seen wearing bright yellow T-shirt and gray sweatpants. The cover would show the poster on one side, and the trail off to the other where two 15 year old teenagers(the two main characters) with backpacks are hiking away from the poster down the Appalachian trail. These would be larger backpacks with sleeping bags, etc. One of the teenagers is female with blond hair and is roughly 5 feet tall, the other is male with black hair, roughly 5’9”tall. (See attached sketch titled Cover idea 2.jpeg and see example attached image - Appalachian Trail Marker.jpeg)
Cover Idea # 3.
Show Dylan, 15 year old male with black hair, at night, running down the Appalachian Trail with a baseball bat held over his head as if he’s ready to swing. The moon is out and sky is clear. He would be wearing shoes, shorts and T-shirt, he would not have a backpack on. He can be running away or toward the viewer. If possible, please incorporate an Appalachian Trail marker. (see example attached image - Appalachian Trail Marker.jpeg)
Again, the ideas above do not have to be what you submit. Surprise me!
Thank you for considering this project!- John

Requirements
Must have
- I would like my name, John R. Kess to be on the top of the image, and the title, Finding Hannah, to be on the bottom. The title needs to be larger than my name so that it stands out more.
Requirements (taken from Amazon/Kindle):
- Image dimensions of at least 500 by 800 pixels.
- A maximum of 2000 pixels on the longest side is preferred
- Ideal height/width ratio of 1.6
I would like to receive the following images from the winner: a layered Photoshop PSD file(or equivalent), thumbnail JPEG, and full sized JPEG.
Nice to have
- Images/items from the book that could be incorporated into the cover design are listed below in no particular order:
- It’s summer time, so surroundings are mostly green/trees are full of leaves, etc.
- Appalachian Trail marker (see example attached image - Appalachian Trail Marker.jpeg), any similar looking concrete post with the AT logo as shown in the picture would be fine as there are many different styles of markers that use the same logo.
- Tree and woods- rural New Hampshire is the setting and the area is surrounded by woods.
- Some of the story takes place on the Appalachian Trail, so incorporating a wooded trail would be preferable.
- Part of the background could be a trail map or elevation map that shows the Appalachian Trail as a dotted line- not sure how well this would work for my cover ideas.
