Logo Design Brief

Organisation: CIKM is a series of annual research conferences focused on topics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, information retrieval and (Web) search, with members of academia and industry, taking place at different places in the world each year. CIKM2020 is the 29th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM) taking place at the city of Galway in Ireland on October 2020. Each conference in the series has a central theme that guides all research contributions to the conference, the theme for CIKM2020 is “Data and Knowledge for the next generation: sustainability, transparency and fairness”. The city of Galway, where the conference will take place, has received the European Green Leaf 2017 award for its commitment to sustainability (https://ec.europa.eu/environment/europeangreencapital/europeangreenleaf/egl-winning-cities/galway/) and it will be the European Capital of Culture for 2020 (https://galway2020.ie/en/) reinforcing the role of technology and arts in culture through the topic: “where science meets tradition”. In addition, Galway is surrounded by magnificent landscape (Connemara, Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, Aran Islands), with excellent, fresh local seafood and plenty to explore, have also been chosen as the European Region of Gastronomy 2018 (http://www.galwaygastronomy.ie/).

Purpose: The CIKM2020 organisation is looking for a designer to create the visual elements to be used for the purpose of promotion and publicity of the CIKM2020 conference. All visual elements are expected to be used within printed material (leaflets, roll-ups and banners) and in digital format (website and social media). The requested elements are:
a logo to represent CIKM2020,
a palette of colours,
a horizontal banner, and
a vertical banner.

Message: The visual identity for the conference is expected to match the identity of the location in which the conference will take place (Galway in Ireland) and the theme and identity of CIKM2020 (Data and Knowledge for the next generation: sustainability, transparency and fairness).

Inspiration: A colour commonly associated with Ireland is the “emerald green” due to its green landscape, and a common symbol for the country is the golden harp that appears in Ireland’s coat of arms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Ireland). Galway city is mostly characterised by the Galway Hookers fishing boats (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galway_hooker) that sail across its bay at least once a year and represented in a sculpture at the main square (Eyre Square) in the city, and by the coloured houses at the Docks Road that serve as a common postal card for the city (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galway). Also quite relevant is the following: the salmon of knowledge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_of_Knowledge).

Target Market(s)

The target audience is primarily composed by researchers in technology (from all over the world) but also by technology companies that are potential sponsors for the conference.
