Logo Design Brief

We need our company name (both “Abrikosov & Sons” and “A & S”) in a suitable font. We also need an overall colour scheme to be used across the board for branding purposes (on our website, labels, packaging, etc.). For now we don’t need help with more. We will use your work in first instance on our website (now under construction).

We already have a suggested palette and a general idea for the design of labels and packaging (see attached for you mood board).
The font should suggest something ‘Slavic’/’Slavonic”.

We are relaunching an old brand from imperial Russia dating back to 1847. Abrikosov & Sons used to be purveyors to the imperial court of tsar Nicolas II, a bit like Fortnum & Masons in the UK.

A&S used to be famous for their confectionaries such as chocolate, cakes, fruit dipped in chocolate, hard candy, jam, teas and biscuits. A Google search for ‘Abrikosov’ will show you images of their pre-revolution packaging style, including promotional posters.

While Abrikosov & Sons had a storefront in a premium location in Moscow before the revolution, we are not planning to open shops for now. Sales will be online and through distribution to fine foods stores in London (with plans to expand to cosmopolitan cities with high concentrations of wealthy Russian speakers and foodies in general). Our London operations will mainly be used for ‘flagship’ and branding purposes as we expect to make most of our sales in Russia as a luxury imported brand. ‘Foreign’ sells better in Russia. Nevertheless, our products will still be ‘Russian’ in terms of flavour combinations and packaging style.

As you will see from the samples of old packaging, the mood is heavy, too ornate and the colour scheme is not modern, light, clean, etc. While we do want to keep an imperial ‘Proud to be Russian’ feel, we need a modern, more minimalistic and fresh version of this. Colours should go well with food, as well.

The general idea is to create a more masculine version of ‘Ladurée”, a less ‘perfumy’ feel than Pierre Marcolini and not the black and gold new version of ‘Fabergé” (a too dramatic and too cliché/middle-eastern expression of ‘luxury’). We do like the studded ‘fishnet’ design on the famous imperial Fabergé eggs. We don’t want a rustic/bohemian/eco-warrior style. Nor do we want a clinical/futuristic mood in the design.

Our brand should become the Fortnum & Mason of Russia. It therefore needs to represent luxury and quality: the brand that comes to mind when needing a personal or corporate gift, including hampers for special occasions, welcome packages, luxury hotel gift shops and duty free shops at airports.

The ‘Proudly Russian’ feel is essential, as we don’t have products to showcase our country except for vodka and caviar. This is our USP. We want to offer something to our Russian customers that they can proudly offer to their friends and clients (instead of vodka or caviar). Some ‘show-off’ elements are therefore necessary in the design.

Our challenge is that we are unknown in the West (despite having been known in the previous century in London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris where the brand won prizes). Russians have heard of our pre-revolution brand but have not actually tasted anything of our original products. A&S never closed their doors after the revolution but their factories were nationalised and renamed ‘Babaevaysky Confectionary Conglomerate’. 15 years ago this conglomerate was sold to Nestle. As a result, they no longer represent quality and refinement. The Abrikosov family, however, still exists and and we are now planning to give the brand a new life, like Fabergé has done by starting a new luxury jewellery brand.
