Logo Design Brief

We need a logo design for Carrollton Hall, an historic 19th century home we are restoring. On the National Register of Historical Places, the Carrollton Hall residence was built in 1832. One of wealthiest landholders in the new United States, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence and a significant founder of American democracy, built the Greek Revival-style granite home. For this project Carroll called upon architect William Small, a protege of Benjamin Latrobe who had designed the U.S. Capitol and Baltimore’s Basilica of the Assumption. Many historians consider this the most significant residence of its time.

Located on the property owned by the Franciscan Friars Conventual, an 800-year old Catholic religious order, Carrollton Hall will serve as a multi-ministry center. Offering expanded retreat and conference space, the new center will also feature exhibits on the history and significance of the house, including Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the founding of the United States, and especially the life of the slaves there. The anchor program of Carrollton Hall will be the Saint Francis Forum, an annual conference convening academics, policy makers, and non-profits to address pressing social issues.

We would like to see designs that communicate the history and grandeur of the house's past but also the hope and action of its future as it engages society to work toward the common good. There are no set colors although the building is gray. Something that incorporates the gray stone but adds other colors would be nice.

Requirements
Must have
  • some aspect of the building's architecture; some aspect of the Franciscan presence of peace and reconciliation among people. Must convey both the gravity of the building's history and stature as well as the hope and optimism of its current and future use bringing people together to work on pressing social issues.
Nice to have
  • some aspect of the building's history (US Declaration of Independence, slavery, emancipation, peace efforts in 20th century, organic farm in 21st century) not all of these things, of course. I just mention them to point out some of the history of the place.
Should not have
  • anything that cheapens the mood of the logo. anything cartoonish.
