I’m terms of style, try to make the map look old. I know maps in most books are black and white, so if you can indicate terroritory allegiances and battle location/victors using different shades of grey, then that would be preferable. However, I know that might be difficult to make clear and legible, so if color is needed, shades of red for Spartan territory, shades of blue for Athenian and then choose different colors for each to mark the battle site victor. Also, for labels, mark the relevant city locations (mainly Sparta, Athens and Syracuse, but add others if necessary), the territory allegiances, and battle site locations.
