Book Cover Design Brief

I need the first of four book covers in a series of traditional old-fashioned love stories with a strong heroine, a strong masculine hero, and some history. Each is set in a different place in Britain, in the modern day with a backdrop of heritage. While some of Jodie Archer's books are contemporary with a sexy side, or an American modern twist, these are very much for an older market, longer books with a real story with many subplots. These are heartache books, delayed romance, difficulties in communication but high passion. They are set by the English coast, all home from home for the lead hero and heroine, both of whom are attracted to the sea and the beach. A castle, ruined, features in each. These are books a 20 year old who loved Jane Eyre will read, as well as your grandma who has read romance all her life. They are substantial books with a heart and some research. The covers need to appeal to all and capture the history of romance as a genre.

Jodie Archer's books on The Year of Love are featured on her site www.jodiearcher.com in Fiction and have the dark gothic colours of her modern romance. These upcoming books should complement these but be for an older crowd with less suggestion of sex. Place is important, history is more important. Castles and tortured hearts are important. Soulful, deep thinking and self discovery.

This book Missing Piece is set at Craster Bay and should feature the bay and castle: we want to see some sea. Dunstanburgh Castle is the ruined castle. There are plenty of images to draw from. If this is too difficult, a couple walking on an English coastline beach would possibly work in the right colours. There must be sea, and no island style! Gothic themes are there, so a little bit darker on the colour wheel is good, but this is still a hopeful romance.

While they are outdated, one idea I like is the revival Lisa Kleypas style cover I attach with the small image. I also attach other covers with the same idea or mood. I prefer photgraphic here if we go with a couple on the beach. She is in her mid 20s, him is mid to late 30s. She is dark haired. He is American. They would be in today's dress, smart casual.
