Logo Design Brief

Brief for The Logo Design for Highland Ross

Highland Ross is a business and executive coaching firm. We help business owners achieve their full potential as individuals and entrepreneurs by helping them gain clarity on “the biggest thing”. Our mission is to coach, to teach, to inspire, to challenge. To offer thought partnership with an unparalleled level of authenticity and trust in the areas of business vision, team-building, processes, and personal development.

Through our logo, we want to convey that engaging in our services will reinforce that which business owners already want to deeply believe about themselves. Among other things, we believe that business owners want to see themselves as visionary, leaders, entrepreneurial, engaging, community leaders, and otherwise having their act (sh*t) together.

To convey this, I have in mind a Scottish / Highlands of Scotland (and highlands of my state, North Carolina) theme. My last name is Ross, which has deep roots in Scotland, the clan Ross. I’m picturing a Scottish bagpiper in full regalia, kilt, sash, cap, etc, with the bagpipes with lots of pipes sticking out. He’s looking over his domain, on a mountain looking down into a valley, maybe looking at a castle below. By his side is his trusty companion, a scruffy little dog like McDuff from the children’s books, or Greyfriar’s Bobby. They can see for miles across the mountains and valleys.

It might be a silhouette, or it might be a two-color logo. The Ross hunting tartan (wool fabric of which the kilts are made) is a plaid of predominately hunter and darker greens with red. We will need to consider that we will be printing flyers and creating powerpoint presentations, so will need to build the logo and coloring into a sweet template.

I love the idea of the Scotsman with the bagpipes, but want to avoid having it look too lonely, stoic, or solemn. We also want to avoid the connotation, though probably inescapable, that bagpipers are used at funerals to play Amazing Grace. They play fun, spirited stuff, too. We aren’t bankers, and would like to think we have abundant personality, although that’s debatable. We try not to take ourselves too seriously.

A “tag line” for our service might be something along the lines of “Clarity of Purpose; Clarity of Path”

I am indifferent if the logo itself contains the company name or tag line. Surprise me.

My 16-yr-old son has done a couple cartoons that are very cute, but perhaps too cute. I have uploaded a picture of them to this post. I've added a few other pictures from Google Images for context.

Thank you!

Requirements
Must have
  • Bagpiper and a dog. The instrument must be fairly easily recognizable, the more pipes sticking out, the better ;)
Nice to have
  • Mountains and valleys
Should not have
  • too much of a cartoon-ish look...as much as I like beer, it shouldn't really look like a beer festival logo
