Logo Design Brief

The next standard in how homes are designed and built in the United States is the "Better Living Design" standard. BLD, as we call it, combines the accessibility of universal design with social and environmental sustainability.

The BLD standard is "design everything for every one."

We need a logo and a "seal of approval" for BLD. The BLD Institute is a new nonprofit (in formation now) that will establish criteria, review home designs, product designs, etc. and issue the BLD "seal" to those who meet the certification requirements.

Read the downloadable brief for more details, examples of other "seal" type programs.

The winning logo will ultimately be seen around the world. Over 40 organizations, associations, universities and corporations are behind this effort. This is a huge opportunity.

Updates

A few early designs are using home/house/building imagery or iconography. While understandable, we ultimately plan to have the BLD designation apply to a wide range of products - for example, tech gadgets like remote controls, DVD players, coffee pots, washing machines and so forth.

That's why we don't think an icon/symbol will work.

Stick with logotype logos, like Coca-Cola or IBM type logos. Better yet, try something like the UPS shield (but not a shield). No separate icons.

Thanks.

First, thank you to all who have submitted designs. We're going to narrow down to a top 10 on Monday. Then, we'll actually conduct some quick consumer research to pick the winner.

The ones we're leaning towards so far are the ones that are simple and could serve us in many size formats. For example, we will ultimately be putting this logo on the bottom of ads for new homes, next to the Energy Star logo. So logos that have finer details will not shrink well and therefore are not likely to be considered.

We appreciate everyone's hard work and look forward to selecting a winner.

Hi Everyone:

We have extended the deadline and increased the budget for this project. We are also now paying for 2nd and 3rd place.

We have gotten some great submissions so far, but need more outstanding options to consider.

Please read the briefing materials, and our updates.

As you think about new submissions, keep in mind we're looking for a logo where the letters are the logo. If you want to include any icons, please integrate them into the letters/logo so the letters/logo are a single visual unit.

The BLD logo will often appear at the bottom of printed materials - brochures, print ads, etc. Therefore we need a logo that effectively communicates in a small size - and in black and white, not just color.

Lastly, the BLD standard will be the new standard in how homes are designed and built. It is an improvement over how things are done today. Therefore, if the logo can imply that this is a step forward, an enhancement, an improvement, aspirational, and so forth. NOT FUTURISTIC, but BETTER.

If you have specific questions, post them and we'll provide guidance.

Thanks again for your participation.

Matt
