Logo Design Brief

I need a logo for a new law firm based on the Central Coast of California. I will offer estate planning/administration, elder law, business law, real estate/property law, and bankruptcy law services.
The firm will be called "The Law Office of Robert E. Traylor."
I want a design that incorporates my initials, not necessarily all three; just the "R" or just the "T" would be fine.
The logo should be classic and timeless, not flashy or ostentatious. It should communicate confidence and competence. The logo/image should be accompanied by the name of the firm in an assertive, professional font, but the logo should also able to stand alone.
I went to Florida State University, so I am preferential to the color garnet (and gold as an accent).
I do NOT want the scales of justice or any other traditional law related themes. I do NOT want books. I do NOT want Roman or Greek columns. I do NOT want a logo that implies an association with any government entity. I do NOT want a font that connotes affiliation with a kindergarten or sorority.
This logo will be used on the firm website, letterhead, business cards, and any related marketing materials, so I will need all associated high resolution files.
I uploaded a crude doodle of a logo I made, but please do not be constrained by my lack of imagination or artistic skill. I like the idea of the use of negative space, but that's not a requirement.
