Infographic Design Brief
We are a homeless shelter. Among other things we provide diapers, formula, and other basic necessities for homeless families. We give out over 5,500 diapers each month! We are holding a diaper drive in the month of August to help bolster our supply of diapers. This infographic will be to share via social media to help people to see the incredible need and inspire them to donate diapers or hold diaper drives themselves.
It just so happens that the Journal of Pediatrics just released a study that has some pertinent information regarding the "Diaper Crisis" among low income families in America.
Here is the key data from the study:
1 in 3 mothers cut back on essentials (food, child care, utilities) to afford diapers
A single mother working full time at min wage would use 6% of gross income on diapers, that's $18 a week for diapers on avg ($936 a year)
8%(1 in 12) of women interviewed had stretched a diaper by leaving a wet one on longer or partially cleaning and reusing it.
30% of mothers had experienced a time when they could not afford to buy the diapers their kids needed.
10% turned to family or friends
10% turned to an agency or diaper bank
3% turned to other sources like a church
Worry about how to pay for diapers in among top stressors for low income parents, next to food and housing.
Our Maryhouse program gives out 5500 diapers a month
A summary article of the study can be found here http://www.nbcnews.com/health/it-made-me-feel-ashamed-poor-moms-anguish-over-diaper-6C10775589 and here http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-diaper-need-20130729,0,1515372.story
