The Marked Ones
Synopsis
Ivyanne Court has grown up knowing that one day, she will be the epicenter of her very universe, and that day has come. Her obligation to her people is simple-to procreate and save her extraordinary bloodline from extinction, a threat that has been hanging over the head of the mer people since their creation, one thousand years before. Ivyanne is an exceptional woman-the fastest, strongest, most beautiful and intelligent creature on land or sea, but she has been betrothed since the age of sixteen, when she was forced to abandon the only boy she has ever loved, a human and therefore forbidden, out of duty to her crown. But when the man she is promised to dies unexpectedly, she finds herself in the position to make a choice for the first time in her twenty-eight years, selecting a husband from the three remaining eligible candidates of The Marked families.
The first, and most promising of all candidates is Tristan Loveridge, the flawlessly brilliant and beautiful golden child with a well-warranted reputation. Tristan is the queen’s favorite, and also the younger brother of Ivyanne’s last match, Nigara Loveridge. He is ambivalent towards inheriting a bride from his brother at first, until he is summoned by the queen to sweep her daughter off her feet. Tristan has never turned down a challenge in his life, and Ivyanne is the personification of a challenge.
The second is Bane Londeree, Tristan’s nephew, a warm, handsome Hawaiian boy from an affluent family-who has shown little to no interest in Ivyanne romantically, his easy-going nature assuring Ivyanne that he may be the safest match.
The third is Ardhi Kayu-Api, Ivyanne’s only confidante and best friend, who stuns her with his declaration of love quickly after Nigara’s death, effectively pulling the rug out from under her. Ardhi is an intense, sly boy who convinces himself that he is the only possibility for the princesses’ hand.
They are sons of The Marked Ones-descendants of fifteen mer families changed by their creator in the beginning for the sole purpose of keeping the bloodline of the royal family pure.
Overwhelmed by the weight of her decision, and her disinterest in all three matches, Ivyanne flees her sheltered home and moves to the mainland to live with the humans while she gathers her wits and garners some independence. She finds herself, in the beginning of the story at The Seaview Resort, her childhood summer escape, and the backdrop for her annual romance with the human who stole her heart in her youth, Lincoln Grey.
At The Seaview, Ivyanne takes a job as a waitress, under the watchful guardianship of several other mermaids who inhabit the area. But nothing is simple there, because on her very first night, she discovers that Lincoln Grey, who has never strayed from her heart-has also never strayed from the area. He and his father now own The Seaview, making him Ivyanne’s new boss.
Lincoln instantly recognizes the girl he loved in his new worker, but while he has aged to a man of thirty, Ivyanne’s incredible genetics have kept her frozen at the age of sixteen. To guard her identity, and the secret of her people, Ivyanne is forced to lie and tell Lincoln that she is not the Ivanna he once loved, but her younger sister. And to explain the absence of her sibling, Ivyanne tells a broken-hearted Lincoln, that Ivanna died years before. Lincoln at first, is beside himself with grief, as he has been waiting for his Ivanna to return for ten years. But he cannot shake his interest in his new employee, and seeks to get to know her better, to unravel the mysteries of her secretive family, even though he is engaged to his head bartender, the glamorous and cantankerous Adele Knightley. Lincoln views Ivyanne’s presence as a mirror of sorts-forcing him to look at himself and see how he has let himself go over time, and to admit that what he wants from life, may not include Adele.
Meanwhile, Ivyanne is frantic that she will be found out, by Lincoln and her own people. Guilt-stricken, she tries to build up Lincoln’s self confidence, so that he might find happiness and his love for life once more, without her. But the happier and healthier he becomes, the more she is drawn to him. She has never stopped loving him, guarding her heart all of these years from her arranged marriages, resolving herself to a life bound tightly to obligation-but now, they are together, out from under her parents’ watchful gazes. For the first time in a decade, Ivyanne feels the thrall of temptation.
At this time, Tristan arrives at the resort to stay as a guest and to work his way into Ivyanne’s affections. At first she is infuriated that he has ignored her wish for peace-and completely aggrieved by his cocky attitude, but she quickly begins to learn that Tristan’s confidence stems from a deserved source. He is charming, witty, well-travelled, sensual, successful and considerate, and as they get to know one another, Tristan is blind-sided by the realization that Ivyanne may just be his perfect match as well. The chemistry between them quickly becomes electric, and Ivyanne begins to see that Tristan may just be enough to distract her from the love of her life….if she can let him go.
But when Ardhi learns through his sister that Tristan, who he has always loathed and envied, has shown up at The Seaview to seduce the princess, he returns to sabotage his rival. Yet it’s Lincoln’s arms he discovers her in, and flies into a fury-choosing this moment to reveal his advantage- he is the rare form of merman-a mystic-graced with the ability to influence the weather, which he demonstrates by pulling lightning out of the sky in warning. But instead of invoking Ivyanne’s desire, he draws her terror, distrust and fury.
Things quickly turn sour after that. Mermaids need a certain amount of time in the ocean, coupled with physical contact, to endure being on the land, and they all begin suffering from the withdrawals created by posing as humans for such long periods of time. They become fatigued, over emotional, angry, and lustful. Lincoln and Tristan’s rivalry escalates and Ardhi fans the flames of hate, willing the other men to self-destruct.
The entire situation comes to a head when Ivyanne seeks her mothers guidance and realizes that she has to let Lincoln go, and give herself to Tristan, who she knows she can grow to love. But Lincoln has been paying close attention, and discovers the truth about the love of his life. He confronts her about it-only to learn they can never be together. To break his heart, and set him free, Ivyanne confesses that she has gone to bed with Tristan.
Lincoln is devastated, but as he is returning to the resort, is sidelined by Ardhi and convinced to get into a boat with him to find Adele, Lincoln’s now ex-lover, who has gone missing. While on the open water, Ardhi attempts to kill the human for attempting to take what is his, just as he plans to kill Tristan-but is shocked when Lincoln reveals that Ivyanne loves him back-and always has, establishing a prior claim which predates even Ardhi’s infatuation.
They fight, and go into the water. Ivyanne and Tristan follow to help, but Ardhi vanishes after stabbing Tristan and almost drowning Lincoln. But when they pull Lincoln to the surface-discover that Ardhi has exchanged his breath for Lincoln’s. Lincoln Grey is now mer, and Ardhi is dead-after having made the ultimate sacrifice.
Ivyanne’s wish has been granted, only now she is going to be forced to choose between her old flame, and the new.
In the end, we see Ardhi coming to life on a deserted island, where he has held Adele captive. Instead of dying, as he’d expected, he has survived-meaning that he also possesses the ability to turn humans to mer at will, cementing him as the most powerful mystic since their creator. Knowing that he has martyred himself with the sacrifice of his life, he formulates a plan to come back, and reclaim his rightful bride.
