Illustration Design Brief
This project involves creating beautiful artistic illustrations for short story e-books being created as part of a nonprofit initiative for developing an online platform for basic English language instruction, especially targeted toward underprivileged, non-native English speaking populations.
We are a team of educators and researchers passionate about this cause and would like to invite talented and creative artists / illustrators to join us in this effort to create positive social impact!
This book contains English text for a short story and requires illustrations (including the book cover) of the following specifications
1. Preferred format: png or gif
2. Dimensions 450 px (width) x 600 px (height) - while this can be flexible, the book page dimensions are 450 px x 600 px, so a proportional image dimension might look nicer.
3. Transparent borders of the images for seamless integration with the book page background
4. No text needed on the illustration: imagine an open book with the illustration on the left page and the corresponding text on the right page.
5. While the primary audience for this book is expected to be young kids (6-10 years), the artistic style is left to the illustrator. Our expectation is more in terms of the high overall quality of the illustrations.
6. Book-cover: One of these illustrations is for the book cover. The book cover should include the illustration, the story/book title (exact title of the book mentioned below), and the text "Illustrated by [Artist Name]" - this is because as a rule we will always make sure that our artists get proper credits for their work and are recognized and acknowledged by everyone visiting our website.
Based on the quality of illustrations, further work might be offered to the artist(s) given our expected continued needs. We follow the standard nonprofit publisher model in terms of ownership of the illustrations.
The story to be illustrated (the artist can choose to repeat the same illustration or create a new one for each page – this is completely left to the artist. We are providing our suggestion below):
Illustration 1: Book cover: the illustration should include story title "How Sun, Moon and Wind Went Out to Dinner" and the text "Illustrated by [Artist's name]".
Page 2 text (subject for illustration 2):
One day Sun, Moon, and Wind went out to dine with their uncle and aunt Thunder and Lightning. Their mother, one of the most distant Stars you see far up in the sky, waited alone for her children's return.
Page 3 text (for illustration 3):
Now both Sun and Wind were greedy and selfish. They enjoyed the great feast that had been prepared for them, without a thought of saving any of it to take home to their mother- but the gentle Moon did not forget her.
Page 4 text (for illustration 4):
Of every dainty dish that was brought round, she placed a small portion under one of her beautiful long fingernails, that Star might also have a share in the treat.
Page 5 text (for illustration 5):
On their return, their mother, Who had kept watch for them all night long with her little bright eye, said, "Well, children, what have yon brought home for me?"
Page 6 text (illustration 5 can be repeated or a new illustration (artist’s choice)):
Then Sun, who was eldest, said, "I have brought nothing home for you. I went out to enjoy myself with my friends - not to fetch dinner for my mother!"
Page 7 text (illustration 5 can be repeated or a new illustration (artist’s choice)):
And Wind said, "Neither have I brought anything home for you, mother. You could hardly expect me to bring a collection of good things for you, when I merely went out for my own pleasure."
Page 8 text (for illustration 6):
But Moon said, "Mother, fetch a plate, see what I have brought you." And shaking her hands she showered down such a choice dinner as never was seen before.
Page 9 text (for illustration 7):
Then Star turned to Sun and spoke thus, "Because you went out to amuse yourself with your friends, and feasted and enjoyed yourself, without any thought of our mother at home- you shall be cursed.
Page 10 text (illustration 7 can be repeated or a new illustration (artist’s choice)):
Henceforth, your rays shall ever be hot and scorching, and shall burn all that they touch. And men shall hate you, and cover their heads when you appear.
And that is why the Sun is so hot to this day.
Page 11 text (for illustration 8):
Then she turned to Wind and said, "You also who forgot your mother in the midst of your selfish pleasures- hear your doom. You shall always blow in the hot, dry weather, and shall parch and shrivel all living things.
Page 12 text (illustration 8 can be repeated or a new illustration (artist’s choice)):
And men shall detest and avoid you from this very time."
And that is why the Wind in the hot weather is still so disagreeable.
Page 13 text (for illustration 9):
But to Moon she said, "Daughter, because you remembered your mother, and kept for her a share in your own enjoyment, from henceforth you shall be ever cool, and calm and bright.
Page 14 text (illustration 9 can be repeated or a new illustration (artist’s choice)):
No noxious glare shall accompany your pure rays, and men shall always call you 'blessed."
And that is why the Moon's light is so soft, and cool, and beautiful even to this day.
Interested artists are encouraged to first send just one or a couple illustrations of their choosing from the list above to get feedback on whether their style might fit our needs. We will ask them to proceed further if the team thinks there is potential for a likely match (of course, the final determination would be made by our team from the pool of shortlisted submissions) - otherwise we'd prefer to be respectful of all the illustrators' time and efforts by requesting them not to proceed further with other illustrations.
We'd like to reiterate that please consider this effort as your contribution to an important social cause of global and accessible online education and not a commercial enterprise (our passion for making a positive impact is what's driving the GLEN World nonprofit team to undertake this initiative!). We'd like to invite you to join us in this effort!
Updates
A note to the illustrators interested in or in the process of submitting their work (mentioned in the brief as well, but this update is due to multiple queries on this topic): Interested artists are encouraged to first send us just one or a couple illustrations of their choosing from the list above to get feedback on whether their style is in line with our needs and preferences. We will suggest the artists to proceed further in the contest with additional illustrations if the team determines that there is potential for a likely match – otherwise, in case the team does not see potential for a match with our needs or if we have received submissions that are more closely aligned to our needs, we'd prefer to be respectful of the illustrators’ time and effort by requesting them not to proceed further. Thanks!

To all the artists who submitted their work to this contest or messaged us to express their interest in our initiative:
1. Thank you so much for your efforts and for your beautiful illustrations!
2. It is really inspiring and encouraging to get messages from many of you and to know that so many of you are keen to help out with our nonprofit initiative and create positive social impact!
3. Many of you are really talented artists and would be great to work with. However, we had to make the difficult decision of picking just one artist and entry for this particular project. Please do not be discouraged if your entries are not selected! The core team just tried to pick the entry that was most closely aligned with our needs, preferences and vision for the project, for which there is no "correct" formula. Hope we get to work with many of you in the future!
Thanks again for your enthusiastic participation!
