Illustration Design Brief

The project involves creating beautiful artistic illustrations for short story e-books being created as part of a non profit initiative for English language education, especially being targeted towards underprivileged, non-native English speaking populations.

We are a team of educators and researchers passionate about this cause and would like to invite talented and creative artists / illustrators to join us in this effort to create positive social impact!

Each book contains English text for a short story and requires about 5-6 illustrations (including the book cover) of the following specifications

1. Preferred format: png or gif
2. Dimensions 600 px (height) x 400 px (width) - while this can be flexible, the book page dimensions are 600 px x 400 px, so a proportional image dimension might look nicer.
3. Transparent borders of the images for seamless integration to the book page background
4. While the primary audience for the first book are expected to be young kids (6-10 years) the artistic style is left to the illustrator. Our expectation is more in terms of the high overall quality of the illustrations.
5. Book-cover: One of these illustrations is for the book cover. The book cover should include the illustration, the story/book title, and the text "Illustrated by [Artist Name]" - this is because as a rule we will always make sure that the artist gets proper credits for their work and are recognized and acknowledged.

Based on the quality of illustrations, further work might be offered to the artist(s) given our expected continued needs. We follow the standard non profit publisher model in terms of ownership of the illustrations.

The story to be illustrated:

Image 1: Book cover: the illustration should include story title "The Lion and the Mouse" and the text "Illustrated by [Artist's name]".

Page 2 text (subject for illustration 2):
Once when a Lion was asleep a little Mouse began running up and down upon him; this soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him, and opened his big jaws to swallow him.

Page 3 text (for illustration 3):
"Pardon, O King," cried the little Mouse; "forgive me this time, I shall never forget it: who knows but what I may be able to do you a turn some of these days?"

Page 4 text (for illustration 4):
The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go. Some time after the Lion was caught in a trap, and the hunters, who desired to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree

Page 5 text (for illustration 5):
while they went in search of a wagon to carry him on. Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts.

Page 6 text (for illustration 6):
"Was I not right?" said the little Mouse.
"Little friends may prove great friends."

Hello,

Thank you very much for the beautiful and inspired submissions so far and for your interest in helping for this great cause! For your information, we do not need any text on the illustrations - imagine an open book with the illustration on the left page (this is where we need your art) and the corresponding text on the right page (we do it ourselves). We've received a few submissions with text so far.

Thanks again for all your efforts!

Thank you for all the inspiring submissions! A note to the illustrators interested in or in the process of submitting their work: Interestedartists are encouraged to first send us just one or a couple illustrations of theirchoosing from the list above to get feedback on whether their style is in linewith our needs and preferences. We will suggest the artists to proceed further inthe contest with additional illustrations if the team thinks there is somepotential for a likely match (of course, the final determination would be fromthe pool of shortlisted submissions, so encouragement to proceed further shouldnot be construed as likely win) – otherwise, in case the team does not seepotential for a match with our needs, we'd prefer to be respectful of the illustrators’time and effort by requesting them not to proceed further with additionalillustrations. Thanks!

To all the artists who submitted their work to this contest:

1. Thank you so much for your efforts and for your beautiful illustrations! It is really inspiring and encouraging to see that so many of you are keen to help out with our nonprofit initiative and create positive social impact!

2. Many of you are really talented artists and would be great to work with. However, we had to make the difficult decision of picking just one artist and entry for this particular project. Please do not be discouraged if your entries are not selected! The core team just tried to pick the entry that was most closely aligned with our needs, preferences and vision for the project, for which there is no "correct" formula.

Thanks again for your enthusiastic participation!
