It says that it should be monochromatic, but only indicating white. It also says the color(s) to be used is only white. Does this mean that the badge must only use white, or, as per monochromatic, can include shades of grey and black?

Also, what would the background be? Would it be grey like the one in the screenshot? Which shade? The darker one or the lighter one?

To answer your question: the badge must only use white - so a single colour badge.

The backgrounds for each badge will eventually be different colours, depending on their category, but they will all be a plain colour.
In the screenshot: the lighter grey indicates badges that haven't been earned, the slightly darker ones have been earned, and the ones with the question marks are "secret" badges.
