good points: simple design, solid colours which would be simple to animate. appealing character
improvment needed: we are looking for approx 6 characters, different colours, different species. Most of the characters need to be at least somewhat anthropomorphic such that they can perform tasks or be clothed, yet still easily recognisable as the animal. eg babar the elephant.

they need to be simple enough to animate, but bright and attractive to children

different specied (eg bird, mammal, reptiale, aquatic etc) would be good with each having a strong basic primary colour.

as to a style, eg retro, anime, cute etc. This is up to your forte. That is what the project is looking for, different design options.
