this sounds like an interesting project however I'm not sure about copyright issues involving these characters.
though they will be slightly different to ones already produced by Disney unless they have given consent on the replication of these characters you could find yourself in a tough situation.

Thanks for your concern matt, the story and characters are no longer subject to copyright, what is protected is only the specific character designs of disney , the names they invented and characters they invented and fonts. These books were written more than a century ago and are public domain.
